First Steps Nursery

Our Vision:

Our vision is to be a model of quality infant and toddler care in our community.  We strive to create a caring community of lifelong learners through the encouragement and support of each individual to reach their fullest potential. 

Program History:

First Steps Learning Center was established in 1987 with the support of a startup grant. Its mission is to provide childcare for infants and toddlers of teen parents attending high school within the Thompson School District and Northern Colorado. It remains the only school-based childcare facility of its kind serving Larimer and Weld counties

Program Information:

First Steps is operated by the Thompson School District and is located at the Early Childhood Center at Stansberry. Licensed by the State of Colorado Department of Early Childhood, the center provides care for children from six weeks old until their third birthday. The program aligns with the district calendar and operates Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

With two classrooms, First Steps can accommodate 10 infants and 10 toddlers, offering care and education to approximately 20–25 children annually. The center also integrates community and therapeutic services, enabling staff and parent training as well as direct intervention services onsite, ensuring comprehensive support for children and families.

Who We Serve and How:

Funding for First Steps Learning Center is secured through collaboration with the Thompson School District, tuition fees, and foundation grants. Ensuring affordable, accessible, and high-quality childcare is essential to supporting teen parents in attending and completing high school. Additionally, the center provides childcare services for district staff, further serving the community's needs.
